On 26 August 1967, Petty Officer Third Class Filberto Aguirre, Jr. was serving with Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PO3 Aguirre was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
