Carroll Edward Adams, Jr. Carroll Edward Adams, Jr. was born on 7 June 1923 in Pawtucket, RI, the son of Carroll Edward and Dorothy French Adams. Adams, Sr. was a Colonel in the U.S. Army and served in both World War I and World War II. Adams, Jr. was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy with the Class of 1945. On 12 May 1970, Colonel Carroll Edward Adams, Jr. was serving as Commander, 937th Engineer Group, 18th Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army Vietnam Engineer Command, in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam. On that day, COL Adams was the pilot of a UH-1H helicopter providing an aerial reconnoiter of Highway 509, about ten miles southwest of Pleiku, for Major General John Albert Broadus Dillard [Honoree Record ID 2428], Commanding General, U.S. Army Vietnam Engineer Command. During that flight, COL Adams' helicopter was hit by enemy fire and he and nine others were killed when the helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. Adams received a posthumous promotion to the flag rank of Brigadier General.
