On 1 September 1969, Captain Robert Paul Acher, Jr. was serving with the 4th Special Operations Squadron, 14th Special Operations Wing, 7th Air Force.

On that day Capt Acher was killed when his aircraft was shot down in Long Khanh Province, South Vietnam. His body was recovered.
