On 12 August 1969, Staff Sergeant Samuel Abrams, Jr. was serving with A Battery, 1st Battalion, 30th Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division, in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SSG Abrams was killed in action when he sustained multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered.
