On 12 May 1968, First Lieutenant Steven Glenn Abbott was serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, 1LT Abbott was killed in action when the helicopter he was piloting was shot down. His body was recovered.
