Private Cornelius Griffin # 3105803, Company F, 316th Infantry was KIA November 4th, 1918, a week before the war's end. No info about the circumstances of his death is listed in his burial file other than, "Pvt. Cornelius Griffin, 3105803, according to our records was wounded in action, Grande Montagne, October 28 to November 11, 1918, and evacuated to an Army hospital: we have no official information as to his death and the location of his grave." Spencer S. Large, Captain 316th Infantry, Commanding Company F.
Initially, Cornelius was buried in Grave #21 in a German Cemetery Co. Nsenvoye, Meuse 35 NE 324.9 E 281.77 N. On June 13th, 1919 he was reburied in Grave #146, Sec. 369, Plot #3 at the Argonne American Cemetery #1232, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon ( Meuse).
At the time of Pvt Griffin's death, his father, John Griffin, was still living in Derrloughan, Glenties, County Donegal and his request was that the US return his son's remains to Ireland. Pvt Griffin's remains were returned to Ireland, May 21, 1922 aboard the SS Millwater along with 63 other soldiers from various counties in Ireland. On June 6, 1922, his father received his remains, along with an American flag, at the train station in Derryloughan, Glenties, County Donegal, Ireland.
The sister of Cornelius was listed as Miss Annie Griffin who was living in Philadelphia, PA, in August of 1921. She received $57.00 as a beneficiary of Insurance and the father got $15.00 for death compensation.
Cornelius is in an unmarked grave in Glenties, but an effort is underway to get a stone from the VA.
