Seaman (E3) Carroll served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) in Korean waters. He was Killed in Action on 13 November 1950. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Carroll was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
