Private First Class Thorpe was a member of Company C, 245th Medium Tank Battalion, 45th Infantry Division. On 22 June 1953, he was killed when a shell exploded as he was loading it near Kongnae, North Korea.

Thorpe was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
