Private Sims was a member of the 822nd Engineer Aviation Construction Battalion. He died of other causes on 12 May 1952 at the 25th Evacuation Hospital near Taegu, South Korea.

Sims was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
