Sergeant First Class Powers was a member of the Heavy Mortal Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He died of other causes on 3 August 1953 near Koje-do, South Korea.

Powers was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
