Private Porter was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On 16 August 1951, he drowned with unknown circumstances near Malsan-ni, Korea.

Porter was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
