Fireman (E2) Mitchell was a member of crew of the aircraft carrier USS Bennington (CVA-20). He was killed on 27 April 1953, as a result of an explosion in the boiler room of the ship during a shakedown cruise near Cuba. Ten shipmates perished.

Mitchell was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
