Corporal Swihart was a member of Company D, 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. On 12 January 1954, he was killed by mine fragments while he was clearing a friendly mine field near Igilli, North Korea.

Swihart was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
