Private Smith was a member of the 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion 24th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded while fighting the enemy near Taejon, South Korea on 20 July 1950 and died of those wounds on 25 July 1950.

Smith was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
