Private Pond was a member of Battery A, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. On 4 May 1952, he was home on emergency leave and was welding an oil tank when it exploded, killing him.

Pond was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
