Private First Class Mitchell was a member of the Radio and Message Center Operations Company, 101st Signal Battalion, U.S. Army. On 4 February 1952, near Chunchon, South Korea, his jeep overturned killing him.

Mitchell was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
