Fireman Pennisi served aboard the repair ship USS Vulcan (AR-5) based at Newport, Rhode Island. On 2 September 1952, he was on leave when his automobile struck a truck near Becket, Massachusetts, killing him and three other naval personnel.

Pennisi was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
