Private Penfield was a member of Headquarters Company, 60th Ordnance Group assigned to X Corps. He died of other causes on 21 June 1951 at the 121st Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in South Korea.

Penfield was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
