Private Peets was a member of the 406th Engineer Training Brigade at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On 2 September 1953, he and 39 other trainees were given a demonstration ride on an engineer pontoon raft on a nearby lake when the raft capsized. Peets and 19 trainees drowned.

Peets was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
