William Herman Brockman, Jr.
Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy

William Herman Brockman, Jr. was born on 18 November 1904 in Baltimore, MD.

Brockman enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1922 and was later appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the Academy in 1927 and then attended Submarine School in New London.

Lieutenant Commander Brockman was placed in command of the USS Nautilus (SS-168). For his actions at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, he was awarded the Navy Cross and two Gold Stars (total of 3 awards) earning the crew of the USS Nautilus the Presidential Unit Citation. Brockman was placed on the Roll of Honor at the Submarine Base, Pearl Harbor. His wartime total was 8 ships sunk for a total of 29,500 tons.

After his command of the Nautilus in the Pacific, he spent a year in the Atlantic Fleet and was the Atlantic Submarine Division Commander from September of 1944 to December of 1945. He received a promotion to the rank of Captain in March of 1945. He commanded the USS Cahaba (AO-82) until February of 1946 and then served in the Seventh Fleet and in Navy headquarters staff positions until his retirement in November of 1947.

Brockman was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral upon his retirement.

Death and Burial

Rear Admiral William Herman Brockman, Jr. died on 2 February 1979 in Boca Raton, FL. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
