Private First Class Nears was a member of the 6th Armored Cavalry, 7th U.S. Army, serving in Europe. He received a serious injury at his duty station and was given a medical discharge in January 1951. He died of those injuries on 7 February 1951 at the Veterans Hospital in Albany, New York.

Nears was awarded the European Army of Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
