Corporal Murrell was a member of the 74th Transportation Truck Company, 55th Transportation Truck Battalion. On 7 March 1951, he was riding in a truck that went over a cliff six miles south of Wonju, South Korea.

Murrell was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
