Private First Class Mullaney was a member of the 566th U.S. Air Force Band stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base, Greenville, South Carolina. While returning to his duty station from a 15-day leave on 4 November 1952, he was killed in an automobile accident near Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Mullaney was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
