Sergeant Mowers was assigned to the Schools Troops Unit, Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia, serving in the officers' candidate program. On 23 January 1954, he was killed when his automobile was struck by a railroad train at Quantico.

Mowers was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
