Master Sergeant Mitchell was a veteran of World War II. He also served in Korea during the war. While serving in Germany, he died of a coronary thrombosis at a hospital in Le Harve, France, on 1 June 1954.

Mitchell was awarded the European Theater Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
