Corporal Clay was a member of the 62nd Engineer Topographic Company. He developed a case of smallpox and was taken to the 8054th Evacuation Hospital where he died on 22 December 1950.

Clay was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
