Corporal Merjanian was a member of Battery C, 780th Field Artillery Battalion. He was Killed in Action while gathering information to direct counter-battery fire near Kajon-ni, North Korea, on 31 January 1953.

Merjanian was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
