Sergeant McManus was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. In Korea, he was a member of the 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while rescuing a comrade from a burning truck in the Chechon-Tanyang-Chungja area of South Korea on 12 February 1951.
