Corporal Marando was a crew member of a B-25 twin engine bomber based at Randolph Field Air Force Base, Texas. On 26 July 1950, he was flying from Randolph, when his aircraft encountered a severe thunderstorm and crashed near Oakley, Kansas.

Marando was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Berlin Airlift Humanitarian Award.
