Private Major was a paratrooper with the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. On 1 September 1951, he was critically injured in an automobile accident near Fort Campbell and died at the base hospital on 9 September 1951.

Major was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
