Private First Class Mackey was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He died of other causes on 23 June 1952 near Tun-gi, South Korea.

Mackey was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
