Master Sergeant Lane was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On 6 August 1950, after leading his platoon during darkness to successfully eliminate enemy pocket of 200 enemy soldiers, he and his men were ambushed. Master Sergeant Lane was mortally wounded.
Lane was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
