Edwin Hood Ferris was born on 19 April 1912 in Washington, DC, the son of Fergus Patrick Ferris and Matilda Kain "Maude" Billman Ferris. Ferris was a 1935 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. After graduating from the Academy and being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, he served in a variety of assignments in the U.S., including Hawaii, until World War ll. In 1944, then-Lieutenant Colonel Ferris commanded the 48th Tank Battalion, 14th Armored Division, as it liberated regions of Alsace-Lorraine, France. During the battle for the town of Barr, France, on 28 November 1944, LTC Ferris was severely wounded in both legs and was replaced as Battalion CO by Division that day. After the war, he continued his Army career until disability from his wounds caused his early retirement in 1949. Post-Military Life In his new career, Ferris served with the Central Intelligence Agency with assignments in Washington, DC, and Athens, Greece. Upon his final retirement, he and his wife, Marie McCoy Ferris, resided in Rockville, MD, and San Antonio, TX. Medals and Awards Bronze Star Medal Death and Burial Colonel Edwin Hood Ferris died on 23 February 2012 in San Antonio, TX. He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Bexar County, TX. |
