Fireman Kroeckel was a crewman aboard the amphibious cargo ship USS Arneb (LKA-56), which had returned to Norfolk from Greenland. On 1 September 1951, while on leave, he was killed in an automobile accident in Rochester, New York.

Kroeckel was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
