Frank Evans Mowatt, Sr.
Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps

Frank Evans Mowatt was born on 15 February 1938, in Lawton, OK, to Spencer and Rachel Pewo Mowatt. He graduated from Indiahoma High School in Lawton.

Frank served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1 June 1956 to 1 April 1959 earning the rank of Lance Corporal. He completed his Boot Training at the US Marine Corps Recruit Training Center in San Diego, CA, and his Advanced Combat and Occupation Training, as a Rifleman, at Camp Pendleton, CA.

LCpl Mowatt was a Fleet Marine. He served aboard the USS Wasp (CV-18), which departed San Diego on 1 January 1957 and sailed around Cape Horn, South America before arriving at the Boston Naval Shipyards at Boston, MA, on 31 March 1957. Enroute, training was conducted in Chile, Brazil and Peru. Mowatt transferred to the USS Galveston (CLG-3) at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyards for about 2 months before being assigned as a Fire Team Leader with Company B, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, at Camp Lejeune, NC.

He also received a Cold War Certificate of Recognition.

Upon leaving the Marine Corps, Frank worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as Chief of Police with the Laguna Pueblo, the Mescalero Apache Tribe, the Isleta Pueblo, the Santa Domingo Pueblo, Taos Pueblo, and San Felipe Pueblo. Prior to retirement he was employed as the Chief of Police of the Comanche Nation, and Chief of Security and Investigation for the Comanche Nation Casino.

Personal

Frank married Phyllis Weryavah, of Cache. They lived in New Mexico for many years before making their home in Cache. His hobbies included: rodeos, horse racing, tribal leather artist and avid OU, Thunder and Dallas fan. Frank Mowatt is a direct descendant of Ten Bears and Little Crow.

Honors

The Comanche Indian Veterans Association honored LCpl Mowatt during their Veterans Day Celebration on 11 November 2010 in Apache with an Honorable Military Service Medallion. We thank LCpl Mowatt for his dedicated, faithful, and honorable service to the U.S. Marine Corps, the Comanche Nation and the Republic. Semper Fi,. Rest in Peace Brother.

Death and Burial

Lance Corporal Frank Evans Mowatt died on 22 January 2014 in Lawton. He is buried at Post Oak Cemetery in Indiahoma, Comanche County, OK.
