Private First Class Joyce was a member of the 148th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company, U.S. Army. On 5 May 1952, he was riding in a weapons carrier near Kwachon, North Korea, when it overturned crushing him underneath.

Joyce was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
