Private Bass was a member of Battery B, 76th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion, U.S. Army. On 24 May 1951, he suffered a severe wound in the Battalion training area and died from this wound on 3 June 1951.

Bass was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
