Ensign Irwin was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a crew member of the destroyer, USS Rich (DD-820). While on service in the Mediterranean Sea, he was stricken ill and was evacuated to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Virginia, where he died on 13 July 1952.

Irwin was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
