Corporal Hoffman was a member of Battery C, 780th Field Artillery Battalion. He was Killed in Action during intense enemy artillery fire near Kajon-ni, North Korea, on 23 March 1952.

Hoffman was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
