Corporal Hinkson was a member of Headquarters Battery, 424th Field Artillery Battalion, U.S. Army. On 24 November 1953, he suffered heart failure while playing basketball at Pultangol, South Korea.

Hinkson was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
