Private First Class Hill was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 1st Combat Service Group, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on 1 March 1951.

Hill was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the Asia-Pacific Theater Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
