Private Hernandez was a member of Battery A, 17th Field Artillery Battalion, IX Corps. He died of other causes on 16 January 1952 near Chaj-Angni, South Korea.

Hernandez was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
