Fireman Hardy was crew member of the destroyer-minesweeper USS Hobson (DMS-26). While on night maneuvers in the mid-Atlantic on 26 April 1952, the USS Hobson collided with the aircraft carrier, USS Wasp. The Hobson sank with Fireman Hardy and 175 others listed as missing.

Hardy was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
