Ensign Hansen was a pilot of a fighter aircraft assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Mindoro (CVE-120). On 16 January 1951, he was making training carrier landings off the coast of Florida, when his aircraft crashed taking him overboard. His remains were not recovered.

Hansen was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
