Corporal Strickland was a member of the Ambulance Company, 115th Medical Battalion (Separate). On 7 September 1953, his jeep was struck by a Korean freight train near Seoul, South Korea.

Strickland was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
