Carl Vernon Riney was born on 20 December 1919, the son of Walter C. and Mary Ellen Markus Riney, He attended school in St. Patrick, MO. Carl moved to Keokuk, IA, from Kahoka, MO, in 1936.
In 1941 at Kahoka he married Nola B. Gatton.
He entered into the U.S. Army on 26 April 1944 and received his basic military training at Camp Roberts, CA. After a short furlough at home he was shipped overseas on 6 November 1944 and saw action in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was killed in action against the Japanese on Luzon in the Philippines on 24 April 1945.
