Master Sergeant Smith was a member of the Tank Company, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. On 13 November 1953, he was killed when the military vehicle he was driving overturned 5 miles southeast of Lujongbu, Korea.

Smith was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
