Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class Goodman was assigned to the Coast Guard Station, Port Angeles, Washington. On 20 January 1954, he was the pilot of a Coast Guard HO4S helicopter on a training flight which crashed in the Port Angeles area killing him and four crew members.

Goodman was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
