Private First Class Garder was a member of the 313rd Engineer Utility Detachment, U.S. Army. On 19 March 1952 near Chunchon, South Korea, he was riding in a jeep that slid over an 80-foot embankment killing him.

Garder was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
