First Lieutenant Ednie was a platoon leader in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 279th Infantry, 45th Infantry Division.

During the Korean War, on 18 July 1953, he courageously led several volunteers through an enemy minefield near Nae-ri, North Korea, in an attempt to recover two wounded men. He was killed when a mine detonated.
